I'm not going to deny recently watched related stuff like Geass, Gurren Lagaan, and Legend of the Galactic Heroes aren't doing Frontier any favors in how I view it, here's the cold hard facts about why this show sucks an egg.
-Virtually 3/4 of your own reviews every week every week are like "this week's episode was so-so", "blah" or worse. Sitting through 4 episodes of ennui for one marginal payoff = no buys.
-Someone like Eric would never survive 5 episodes of this show.
-Aside from Sheryl, Frontier has one of the most forgettable cast of any show I've seen in the last 10 years
-Ranka, Ranka, Ranka, Ranka, Ranka. I know you knew Ranka was going to be in this...but sweet mother of Miriya why is she on screen for 11 out 22 minutes every week (or worse, if she's not onscreen they're talking about her!).
-The animation ISN'T very good at all, especially the 3D garbage is almost laughable. Everytime that fighter with the spinning dealy on top shows up I think to myself "really?"
-Who the fuck are the bad guys?! 20 episodes and not only do you not care what the the bad guys are up, you barely know anything about who they are or what they want.
-Sure there's action sequences, but what's on the line? Do you care? Did they even explain it? Was the "awesome action scene" an afterthought so they could sing the fucking song Ranka wrote for the fifteenth time? Probably!
-And probably most damning of all, what do we always say is the worst thing a show can be? A show can be be so good it's great, or so bad it's great but to be so in the middle you just wish it was over....well this show is like the all-new-for-2008 poster child for that theory if you ask me.
Maybe I have some set standard because it's called "Macross" but at the same time the fact it's called "Macross" is the only thing that separates it from like BLASSREITER or some other free at crunchyroll show, because the Macross name, a few name drops and a faux SDF is all Frontier brings to the table. If that works for you guys, I'm envious because to me this show ain't nothing but a time burglar.
The part where she sang, or the part when after the military dude with the bad haircut delivers a kickass speech, only to be followed by asking Ranka will sing (taking the wind out of whatever awesomeness they almost built up to?) ;D
By the standards of any other show, week 22 was about average or slightly above average. Seeing as where the Frontier bar is set, this must be a masterpiece?!
Pretty okay week, there's some plot stuff happening which would probably be exciting if they would have alloted 5 minutes over the course of the series to develop a single charcater so you cared about them even an iota.
I'll give them this though: VIRTUALLY NO RANKA THIS WEEK so I think after the Zentradi name-dropping episode this is probably the second best episode of this series.
