I would never pay money for Sony. (I hate them sooooo)
Sony has copyrights on the CD itself as well as the CD player.
So when they had these in the late 80's, Sony bought a bunch of record companies; ie A&M, Capital, EMI (these are just off the top of my head... it's been a while since I've had this discussion), and effectively got the record companies to STOP producing vinyl.
And contrary to the push for CD's as a better product in the early 90's ("DON'T be stuck in the Dark Ages with that mouldy old turntable!!!! Bask in the glory that is the Compact Disk & the Compact Disk Player!" is what we were all told as consumers), CD's were only able to MATCH the same sound quality as vinyl around 1995 or 1996.
So as opposed to dying a dignified death, vinyl was basically butchered for some big wig exec to make even more money.
though I will say... it's not quite been put down yet, and it still fights the good fight.
